Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body does not respond optimally to the hormone insulin. This limits glucose uptake in the cells and can be viewed by elevated blood glucose values in spite of the body to produce enough insulin.

Symptoms

Syndrome X is the term for a number of symptoms that can occur with insulin resistance. These include symptoms of high blood sugar, obesity primarily on the stomach, fatigue, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and possibly unwanted hair growth.

Reason

The diet has a great importance in the lifestyle factors leading to insulin resistance. Consuming a diet high in refined carbohydrates and lack of important building blocks such as vitamins, minerals and good fatty acids are very important. Of importance are also a lack of exercise and genetics.

With the right diet elevated insulin production can be reduced and insulin’s ability to enhance transport of glucose into the cells. This may alleviate insulin resistance and reduce the risk of developing complications such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, obesity, cardiovascular problems and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Dietary changes with a greater intake of particular fiber, vitamins, minerals and good fats, along with small lifestyle changes such as exercise, helps to increase insulin’s ability to absorb glucose thereby lowering blood sugar.
