This is simply what my life is normally like.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">I hear versions of this regularly in practice.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">When I bring those recurring conversations together, they often sound something like this:<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><em data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"em\">\u201cI cope well. I get through what needs to be done, and I don\u2019t feel panicked or overwhelmed.<\/em><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><em data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"em\">But my shoulders are always tight. I wake during the night thinking about what needs to happen next. My digestion becomes unsettled when life is busy, and by the weekend I am completely drained.<\/em><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><em data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"em\">Even when I have time to rest, I struggle to sit still. I reach for my phone, find another task or begin thinking about Monday.<\/em><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><em data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"em\">This is simply how I function.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">This reflects a pattern I have encountered across many consultations, rather than one individual patient\u2019s story.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">That final sentence is often an important clue.<\/p><h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Stress is not only a feeling<\/strong><\/h3><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Many people expect stress to feel obvious.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">They imagine worry, panic, emotional overwhelm or the feeling that life is out of control.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">But ongoing pressure can become so familiar that it no longer feels unusual. You may remain mentally capable and continue functioning well while your body struggles to settle and recover.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">This may look like:<\/p><ul class=\"ak-ul\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"bulletList\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Holding tension in your jaw, neck, shoulders or abdomen<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Waking during the night with your mind already active<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Feeling impatient or overstimulated by ordinary noise and demands<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Finding it difficult to rest without feeling guilty or restless<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Digestive symptoms that worsen during demanding periods<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Feeling exhausted once the weekend or holiday finally arrives<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">None of these symptoms proves that stress is the cause. Sleep disorders, hormonal changes, pain, blood sugar fluctuations, nutrient deficiencies, medication effects and other health concerns can create similar experiences.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The important distinction is this:<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Coping and recovering are not the same thing.<\/strong><\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">You can be highly capable and still be carrying more strain than your body is managing comfortably.<\/p><h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">When pressure becomes your normal setting<\/strong><\/h3><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The body is remarkably adaptable.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">When pressure is short lived, the stress response helps us meet a challenge and then settle again.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The difficulty arises when there is no clear transition between demand and recovery.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Work ends, but the mind continues planning. The family crisis passes, but the body remains braced. You sit down, but your attention immediately searches for the next thing requiring action.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">After a while, tension may stop feeling like tension. It simply becomes your usual setting.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">You may only recognise the pattern when sleep becomes lighter, digestion becomes less predictable, your energy drops, previous symptoms return or ordinary demands become harder to tolerate.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">This does not mean that every symptom is \u201cjust stress.\u201d It means that the way your body is responding to ongoing demand deserves to be considered as one part of the wider clinical picture.<\/p><h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">A three-minute check-in for this week<\/strong><\/h3><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">You do not need to diagnose yourself or force yourself to relax.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Pause once a day and notice:<\/p><ol class=\"ak-ol\" start=\"1\" data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"orderedList\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">What is your body doing?<\/strong><br data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"hardBreak\" data-prosemirror-node-inline=\"true\" \/>Is your jaw clenched? Are your shoulders raised? Is your abdomen held tightly? Are you breathing comfortably?<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">What happens when nothing is required of you?<\/strong><br data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"hardBreak\" data-prosemirror-node-inline=\"true\" \/>Can you settle, or do you immediately reach for your phone, start another task or feel uneasy?<\/p><\/li><li data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"listItem\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">Are you resting, or have you simply stopped working?<\/strong><br data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"hardBreak\" data-prosemirror-node-inline=\"true\" \/>Sitting down is not always the same as moving into a genuinely restorative state.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Then try one small experiment.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Create a ten-minute transition between the demanding part of your day and the evening. This might be a slow walk, sitting outside, gentle stretching, a warm shower or having a cup of tea without your phone.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The goal is not to make yourself calm. It is simply to notice whether your body can change gears when it is given a clear opportunity to do so.<\/p><h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\"><strong data-prosemirror-content-type=\"mark\" data-prosemirror-mark-name=\"strong\">How I approach this pattern<\/strong><\/h3><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">In consultation, I do not begin by saying, \u201cYou need to relax.\u201d<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">I want to understand what began first, what was happening when the symptoms changed, whether they worsen during pressure or after it has passed, and how sleep, energy, digestion, hormones, pain and mood interact.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Medication, stimulants, nutrient status, blood sugar regulation and other possible contributors may also need to be considered. Existing results may need to be reviewed, and sometimes further investigation or referral is appropriate.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">Only then can we decide whether the next step involves adjusting current treatment, acupuncture, lifestyle support or carefully selected nutritional, herbal or homeopathic support.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">The aim is not to remove every demand from your life. It is to understand what may have reduced your ability to adapt, recover and feel like yourself again.<\/p><h3 data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"heading\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">When it may be time to review the pattern<\/h3><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">New, persistent or worsening symptoms deserve proper assessment rather than automatically being attributed to stress or a busy life.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">If you are already under my care and symptoms you once considered temporary have quietly become your \u201cnormal,\u201d it may be time to review whether your current treatment still fits what your body is doing now.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">If this pattern feels familiar and you would like us to look more closely at what may be contributing to it, you are welcome to request a consultation.<\/p><p data-prosemirror-content-type=\"node\" data-prosemirror-node-name=\"paragraph\" data-prosemirror-node-block=\"true\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever said, \u201cI\u2019m not stressed,\u201d while your body seemed to be telling a different story?
